SWL IR Remote for R-5000 shown with optional Universal Remote
SWL IR Remote shown connected with supplied cable
The Kenwood R-5000 is a really nice receiver, but is known to develop key bounce, making it very difficult to operate the receiver from the front panel. You can operate the controls of the R-5000 from the Universal Remote and you don't have to use the front panel keys for frequency entry. Frequency, and modes can be controlled from the Universal Remote. You can even announce the frequency with the optional Kenwood speech synthesis module. All analog controls operate normally from the front panel. The SWL IR Remote interfaces to the R-5000 by connecting to the ACC DIN connector on the R-5000, and uses the computer interface built into the radio. The computer interface option for the R-5000 consisted of an IC-10 kit that installed inside the R-5000, and the IF-232C external level converter that connected to the 6-pin ACC DIN connector and converted the TTL levels to RS-232C for the computer. The IC-10 kit chips and instructions for installation are included with the SWL IR Remote. You do not need the Kenwood optional Level Converter to use the SWL IR Remote with the R-5000. The SWL IR Remote connects directly to the 6-pin ACC DIN connector and operates the R-5000 with the Universal Remote. Kenwood has not provided any means of controlling the volume with the computer interface.
If you have the VHF Converter option installed, the SWL IR Remote will also work in that frequency range.
An optional RS232C Level Converter in the SWL IR Remote will permit computer operation of the R-5000 through the SWL IR Remote control box. No additional equipment is required for computer operation.
Note: Early models of the R-5000 were known to have a problem with tuning when the frequency was set using the remote interface. We have found a way to deal with this problem and the SWL IR Remote tunes the frequencies on the early models properly.
This remote will also operate with the TS-440 Transceiver. Power on/off from the remote is not supported on the TS-440.
Features
Turn receiver on and off.
Enter frequency directly to 10Hz in SSB and CW modes and 100Hz in AM mode in the range of 100kHz to 30MHz.
Enter frequency directly to 1kHz in the range of 108 to 174MHz with optional VHF Converter.
Increase or decrease frequency using CH +/- in steps of 10Hz (SSB and CW), 100Hz, 1kHz, 5kHz, 9kHz, 10kHz, 100kHz, and 1MHz in the range of 100kHz to 30MHz.
Increase or decrease frequency using CH +/- in steps of 2.5kHz, 5kHz, 9kHz, 10kHz, 100kHz, and 1MHz in the range of 108MHz to 174MHz with the optional VHF Converter installed.
Set up to five (5) User Tuning Steps. Useful for detuning frequencies by one half of filter bandwidth or use a very small frequency step to quickly zero-beat in SSB mode.
Recall last directly entered frequency.
Directly select memory channels.
Move up and down through memory channels using CH +/-.
Start and Stop programmed and memory scans.
Move memory frequency and mode to VFO.
Write VFO frequency and mode to currently selected memory.
Toggle between AM, LSB, USB, FM (configurable), or CW (configurable).
Select VFO or Memory mode.
Select VFO A or B.
A=B VFO.
Select ANT 1 or 2.
Toggle STEP.
Announce with speech synthesis. Only works with Speech Synthesis (VS-1) option installed.
Connect to a computer RS-232C port with optional SWL IR Remote Level Converter.
Settable parameters:
Enable/Disable FM and CW modes in mode selections.
Frequency pacing. You can control the pacing of frequency up and down. This is how fast the frequency changes when you hold the CH+/- keys.
Enable/Disable VHF Converter operation.
Define up to five User Tuning Steps.
Status LED that shows communications status, settable parameter entry, and clear key operation.
